Renewable Power Cameroon has the following missions:

  • To deliver reliable and sustainable electricity to underserved communities.

  • To adapt our projects to local rural conditions in order to foster economic growth and environmental protection.

  • To demonstrate how clean power is the best choice for off-grid energy supply while reducing carbon emissions at the same time.

  • To establish the links between mini-hydro projects and the source of water in forests and catchment areas.

The Background

Hydropower will remain the key renewable energy option for electricity in the years to come.  According to the International Energy Agency’s World Energy Outlook hydropower will continue to grow at 1.8% per year and supply half of renewable electricity up to 2040.  Although solar, wind and marine technologies will see greater growth rates, hydropower will remain the workhorse of the sector and continue to contribute 15% of all electrical energy in the world.

The Technology

Hydropower technology can be applied on the small to large scale at a wide range of sites and developed as run-of-river projects, multi-purpose water schemes with dams and as pumped storage (increasingly important for electricity dispatch when demanded).

The most sustainable scale of hydropower is in the mini-hydro range of 1 – 10 MW.  At a time when huge and controversial hydro schemes are being pursued that take decades to build, small schemes can be realised quickly, with benefits for local people and less impact on the environment.  Mini-hydro schemes are on a human scale, their financing is simpler and they can make the link between the source of river water in the catchment area and people’s use of this resource.

Our UK Director

Simon Taylor, a British national, is a mechanical engineer with 30 years of experience in all aspects of renewable energy, with a focus on hydroelectric systems. He has worked worldwide on the planning of hydropower projects in the range of 10 kW to 88 MW, leading feasibility studies, development designs, planning applications and financing especially for mini hydropower and solar PV plants for rural electrification.

Our Cameroon Director

Willy Tiam, a Cameroonian national, is an energy expert with more than 20 years of experience in energy infrastructure projects in Central and West Africa. He began his career at the Ministry of Energy and Water with distribution transmission activities between 2003 and 2010. He was then successively at the REA from 2010 - 2014 and at EDC from 2014 - 2017 before continuing his career in West Africa as a consultant.

Our Power Systems Engineer

Ahmadou Bamanga is an experienced Power Systems Engineer with a long time working in the renewable energy sector in Cameroon, most recently with the Agence de Electrification Rurale.

He joined the RPC team full-time in 2025 and leads on field missions, management of consultants and is an expert in negotiations with the relevant state agencies such as ARSEL and SOCADEL.
